HiJack is a hardware/software platform for creating cubic-inch sensor peripherals for the mobile phone. HiJack devices harvest power and use bandwidth from the mobile phone's headset interface. The HiJack platform enables a new class of small and cheap phone-centric sensor peripherals that support plug-and-play operation. HiJack has been tested with the iPhone 3G/3GS/4G, iPod Touch, and iPad devices.
Feb 28, 2018 The new Airfoil Satellite for Android brings the Android platform to full parity with iOS when it comes to Airfoil, and it inherits the old app’s release history. Speaking of the old app, if you have an older Android device running Android 2.3 through 5.1.1, get Airfoil Speakers for Android from our Legacy page. With it, you can turn those. Tip: Another option to record both Mac and mic audio together is the $59 app Audio Hijack. It’s built by the team that made Soundflower, and makes it much easier to merge your mic and audio in a couple clicks. Jan 10, 2020 Airfoil Satellite is an audio receiver and remote control for Airfoil. Use it to turn any Android device into an audio receiver, and to remotely control Airfoil. With Airfoil Satellite, your smartphones and tablets can all become part of your whole-house streaming audio setup.
Power. The HiJack energy harvester can supply 7.4 mW to a load with 47% power conversion efficiency when driven by a 22 kHz tone from the output from a single audio channel on the iPhone 3GS headset port, all using electronic components that cost just $2.34 in 10K volumes. We are exploring other approaches for achieving higher conversion efficiencies.

Data. The HiJack communications layer offers two data transfer schemes. The first allows 300 baud data transfer using Bell 202 FSK signaling. The second offers 8.82 kbaud using a Manchester-encoded, direct-digital communication using hardware accelerators on the HiJack microcontroller and a software-defined, digital radio modulator/demodulator on the phone. The first scheme is described in the ISLPED'10 Design Contest entry (below). The second scheme is described in the DEV'10 paper below.

Sensing. We envision a range of sensorboards including ozone, carbon monoxide, DVM, blood pressure, blood glucose, and others. But today, we only have four daughterboards: (1) a simple demo board with temperature/humidity sensors, PIR motion sensor, and potentiometer used on the early HiJack prototypes; (2) a 3-lead EKG sensor; (3) a basic soil moisture sensor; (4) a breakout board for fast prototyping on the latest generation of HiJacks.

Update (December 12th, 2012): The information below is somewhat deprecated. We now recommend our own free Airfoil Speakers for Android.

As Android has grown, we’ve received more than a few requests to bring both Airfoil and Airfoil Speakers to the platform. It only makes sense – people with Android devices want to be able to send audio from those devices out to AirPlay receivers, just like iOS users can. They also want to be able to turn their Android devices into AirPlay receivers, to receive audio sent from their Macs or PCs. Right now, however, we have no concrete plans to bring either of these apps to Android.
That doesn’t mean you can’t receive audio from Airfoil on your Android phone though! As it turns out, there’s a third-party AirPlay receiver for Android called AirBubble. Much like Airfoil Speakers Touch on iOS, AirBubble turns your Android device into an AirPlay receiver. It can then receive audio from your Mac or PC can play, thanks to Airfoil.
To check out AirBubble, just download it from the Android Market. The free version will let you try it out, and receive audio for 30 minutes per launch. If you plan to keep using it, you’ll probably want to purchase the $2 AirBubble License app to unlock unlimited audio playback.
Like the Boxee Box previously discussed, AirBubble running on Android does not play audio in sync with other outputs. That means you won’t be able to include your Android device in a multi-output system if you want everything to play in sync. However, if you just want to send from a Mac or PC to your Android device, you’ll be all set.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the Android platform for future opportunities. For now though, if you want to play any audio from your Mac or PC to your Android phone, check out AirBubble in conjunction with Airfoil.
